The OSCE will hold a round of talks on issues of gender equality in March 2010, Kazakhstan’s IA Novosti reports based on a statement by Madina Dzharbusynova, a special emissary of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We deemed it appropriate and necessary to include problems of gender in our list of priorities for the chairmanship [of the OSCE in 2010]. Accordingly, next March we will hold the first additional round of talks to discuss ‘advancing gender balance and women’s participation in political and public life,’” Dzharbusynova said at the international conference titled “Kazakhstan’s Chairmanship of the OSCE: The Gender Aspect.”
In turn, the country’s Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Gulshara Abdykalikova, remarked that in recent years the number of women in Kazakhstan’s legislative, representative and executive branches of government has significantly grown.
According to her data, women comprise 46% of the country’s hired laborers. At the same time, the minster pointed out that the average salary for women is only 64% of the men’s average.
Overall, experts from the World Economic Forum rank Kazakhstan 47th out of 134 in its annual Global Gender Gap Report.
The Report compares opportunities for men and women in four areas: politics, employment and career growth, education and healthcare.
