You know, the guy on this image http://www.neweurasia.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dedmoroz02.jpg is not actually Ded Moroz. It’s a Yakutian “Chiskhan” (Чысхан, google for it) also known as “the bull of winter”, that was an evil spirit of winter frost who took the “good” side after falling in love with a mortal girl who’s name was Cholbon Kuo (≈Polaris Girl from Yakutian) that later became his wife (Ded Moroz doesn’t have any wife).

@Sinterklaas, Sinterklaas–don’t be silly, the Zwarte Piet tradition is a direct and immediate inheritance of African colonization (check out a nice summary of his history here: http://whatiftheyweremuslim.com/2011/12/15/in-holland-santa-doesn%E2%80%99t-have-elves-he-has-slaves/ ) and slavery. His origins can be directly traced to the story “Saint Nicholas and his Servant” from 1845 by Jan Schenkman where he was described as an “African servant.”

Your interpretation of a ‘black painted germanic warrior’ not only has no basis in reality (it isn’t hard to troll through the long history of Dutch painting and find darkish-looking, non-African people depicted), but it obscures the troubling Dutch history of colonization and the deplorable ongoing treatment of Africans in Europe.

Oh, I grew up with Santa Clause, and I have to say, Ded Moroz is pretty badass.

A very cheerful article. One thing that comes to my mind is, growing up in Soviet Union, I loved Snegurochka, and for some reason, I was sure that she was his grand-daughter and not his (trophy) girlfriend.

You are completely wrong about the Dutch Sinterklaas and his servants. Zwarte Piet, (black Piet) is not a negro, but a black painted germanic warrior.
