Manshuk Mametova Lake

Translation of Jackara’s post

The lake named after Manshuk Mametova, the hero of WWII, is situated at the height of 3,600 meters above sea level. This cold and lifeless lake was created in result of meltdown of an ancient glacier.

The melt water is accumulates in the “bowl” of 30 meters in depth.

There is a small river running out of the lake. Interestingly, specialists do not know for sure where it disappears later. Perhaps, it goes under the glacier and collects there in some natural reservoir.

The manshuk Mametova Peak is 4,144 meters height.

The glacier and the lake are fraught with serious threat of intensive meltdown.

You can see a huge fragment of ice broke away from the glacier. Actually, it is a rather regular occasion, but it looks very captivating. If the lake gets burst, their will be a huge mass of mudflow - nearly 200 thousands cubic kilometers. In 1958 a little dam had been built downstream.
