I have previously covered some interesting points of internet use in Uzbekistan. Earlier, Tolkun has also covered the mobile phones market in his post. Today, I found an article on the website of Russian Regnum news agency on the development of telecommunications in the country. Below I am giving a rough translation of it. The summary and more information of the meeting of Uzbek Agency for Communication and Information (UzACI) is also available at infocom.uz (RUS.).

The number of Internet users in Uzbekistan has reached 1.835.000 persons (69 users per 1000 residents), and that of cell-phone subscribers 3.744.000 (increased by 1024.000 in 1H of 2007). This information was given at the meeting of collegiate of UzACI related to the outcomes of the companies of the sphere in the first half of 2007, according to the press service of the agency on 30 July.

The participation of territorial departments and companies of the UzACI at the meeting was conducted through video-conferencing. The meeting was held by the deputy prime minister, chairman of the collegiate, General Director of UzACI Abdulla Aripov.

In the report of the deputy general director of UzACI Asadjon Khodjaev it was noted that the profits of the sphere in the past period increased by 46.5% compared to the same period of the past year. According to his data, as of 1 July the total telephone density per 100 residents, including the subscribers of mobile cellular phones, made 20.7 phone devices.

The number of subscribers of mobile connection of the first half of 2007 increased by 1.024 million and reached 3.733 million subscribers. Approximate number of internet users raised to 1.835 million persons, which is equal to 69 users per 1000 residents of the country. Total number of places of collective use of Internet is 680 (According to Internet World Stats, Internet use growth in Uzbekistan in the period of 2000-2007 was 23,166.7%, from 7,500 to 1.745.000 users as of February 2007. Compare to other Central Asian countries).

The milestone for such a rise of internet use in Uzbekistan was a presidential decree of 30.05.2002 on the development of information technologies and a national program later adopted. The program was introduced with the collaboration of the UNDP office in Uzbekistan. As a result of the decree and following resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan many types of customs duties and taxes on computers and services were, either eliminated, or largely decreased.

If only the same could also be done in other spheres of economic activity…
