The public foundation Civil Initiative on Internet Policy (CIIP) published results of the research of Internet in Kyrgyzstan. The research was made together with Promotank HQA company. The duration of the investigation was 4 months, from December, 2008 to May, 2009. The main aim of this research was to explore the Internet audience, the identification of existing volumes and the capacity of the market, the preferences of users. I’ve decided to post some extracts. Just to start: there are 1421 web-sites in Kyrgyzstan at the present moment.
Bishkek is an Internet-leader
77% of Internet users live in Bishkek city, 10% of the Internet audience locate in Osh region, 4% in Jalalabad and Chui regions. According to the report, the total number of Internet users in Kyrgyzstan is 760,664 people. 51% use Internet at work, 21% use mobile Internet, 20% visit Internet cafes, and 8% use Internet at home.
Forget about wireless!
48% of Internet users use switched channels, 40% users use detached and DSL channels. Only 1% of users use wireless Internet access.
Only youth in the Internet
The audience of the Internet is represented by young people aged 10 to 20 years (40%) and 20 to 30 years (35%) and 30 to 40 years (16%).
How much time do Kyrgyzstanis spend in Internet?
32% of users spend in the Internet 3-4 hours per week, 22% – 5-6 hours per week. More than 8% of Internet users spend more than 6 hours per day.
How much does Internet cost in Kyrgyzstan?
The majority of Internet users (37%) pay for the Internet from 101 to 500 soms (from 2.5 to 11 USD), 29% spend from 501 to 1000 soms (from 11 to 23 USD). Only 11% spent from 1001 to 3000 soms (from 22 to 70 USD), and 2% of users – more than 3000 soms (70 USD). Also, 12% did not spend money for the Internet, as well as use it at work. It should be noted that 5.6% of respondents said they use the Internet at work, as well as in other places, so they do not pay for the entire Internet-traffic.
What for do the Kyrgyzstanis use the Internet?
50% respodents don’t use the Internet for work and 11% very rarely go to the Internet for work. Most of the time respondents use the Internet for entertainment, communication and dating. 33% of the respondents most often and 40% sometimes use the Internet to study and get the news.
