Today in Bishkek, near the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party (SDPK), opposition parties of Kyrgyzstan held People’s Kurultai — an alternative kurultai to the Kurultai of Consent proposed by the president Bakiev and which will be held in March 23. In the People’s Kurultai, opposition leaders and elderlies from different parts of Kyrgyzstan gave speeches on the increasing socio-economic and political problems in the country.
According to various sources, People’s Kurultai gathered from one and half to 6 thousand people. Bloggers at neweurasia, who were at in People’s Kurultai, estimated about 3,5-4 thousands participants.
Among the participants were leaders of the opposition MPs from the parliamentary faction of the Social Democrats, human rights activists, representatives of civil society and public organizations.
During their speeches, speakers actively criticized the current government that could not justified the hopes assigned to it after the March revolution of 2005. Along with the high-profile names of the government, one could often hear names of the Maxim Bakiev and Eugene Gourevitch, that the former gave the latter, who, according to the opposition, was a member of the Italian Mafia, the strategic financial reserves of Kyrgyzstan. To our great regret, the opposition did not provide any specific alternative solutions to existing problems of the country, but merely criticized the current regime during the whole event.
