According to the article in Britain’s Daily Mail, a high-profile Kazakh diplomat may be expelled from Britain after it was revealed that top secret intelligence files suggest he is a KGB spy.
Kairat Abusseitov, Kazakhstan’s attaché to London, is already at the centre of cash-for-lobbying claims surrounding Prince Andrew and multi-million-pound oil deals in the former Soviet republic. A senior member of the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee called for the Foreign Office to investigate these claims [...]. In accordance with the top secret files Abusseitov was recruited by KGB as a spy in 1998 and codenamed “Delano” [...] In the afternoon, August 15, «Ambassador Abusseitov confirmed he had regular contact with the KGB during the Eighties and Nineties – and with Major Efimov – but said: “I was never his agent and I was never paid by the KGB. I was not a spy for him or anyone else in the KGB and I was never paid by them”.
The journalist refers tp the report, written by KGB Major A.V. Efimov in 1992, where he gave the recommendation to send Abusseitov abroad as the intelligence agent to contact foreigners in the interest of KGB. The report also included brief personal profile for Abusseitov and another recommendation to hire him on a part-time basis to serve in KGB’s First Intelligence Department for a monthly salary of 700 Roubles. However, it is not said whether the current diplomat had accepted the offer or not.
His duties of the attaché involve visits to the Queen, discussions with senior Ministers and participation in the confidential United Nations discussions on terrorism and nuclear weapons. In addition, Abusseitov also shares with Prince Andrew the duties of the honorary president of the British Kazakh Society, which bridges Kazakh government and businesses with major British companies, including BAE Systems, the defense enterprise.
