Conjuring up atrocities
Kyrgyzstan, Politics and Society3 Comments
To be honest, it seems like both sides are literally conjuring purported atrocities, almost like a race to see who can establish the “genocide” misnomer first. But conspiracy theories are abounding at the moment.
Some people say that the upper echelons of Kyrgyz society stand to benefit somehow from the chaos; others say that it’s not really Uzbeks or Kyrgyzs fighting at all, but agents provocateurs. And then there’s the whole question of whose side is the military really on and why isn’t aid reaching everyone, i.e., Uzbek residents. The image of Kyrgyz civilians riding on top of military vehicles certainly doesn’t inspire confidence. I just pray that the worst of the conspiracy theories buzzing around the cinders of Osh and Jalalabad aren’t true.
