Drink and forget your sadness

… would say Omar Khayyam commenting on the following news.
According to the article at Drinks Media Wire, soon Russian Standard Vodka (RSV) will appear in the alcohol market in Uzbekistan. RSV is a well known brand of vodka thats famous for its quality. The article also says that the Uzbek alcohol market is among top 10 in the world! And its still expanding! Its very hard to believe, as Tashkent, a capital of Uzbekistan, had been declared a World Islamic Cultural Center Capital in 2007. Plus, all those statistics of security agencies on increasing religious extremism and radicalism do not fit in this context, as Islam bans alcohol.
Maybe Omar Khayyam, a famous Persian poet and philosopher, was right when he said that alcohol helps people to forget the reality and live in dreams. Todays socio-economic situation in Uzbekistan is not that good. Migrant workers are coming back from Russia and Kazakhstan, because they cannot find jobs. The world economic crisis hit even peasants in the most rural places of the country. Maybe people are finding their “chicken soup for the soul” in alcohol?

sounds incoherent …

To begin, imagine beer in Czech R. Ireland or Germany, Vodka in Uzbekistan is more than that, meaning its status. We certainly drink less, way too less than them. Now, I’m not even going into religion thing. Those who stress country’s Muslimness are talking quite a lot of nonsense.
Quote from Drinks Media Wire’s article: “Demand for HIGH QUALITY [emphasis added] premium vodka continues to increase in Uzbekistan…” said Mykola Kuzemko, Export Director of Russian Standard Vodka. Is this not a GOOD news? People want HIGH QUALITY vodka, this means they have more money to afford it. Can’t you see simple logic here? I’m sure Standard Vodka is much better than “samagon”…
Besides, socio-economic situation in many countries, especially in the West, is not good. Uzbekistan is actually doing quite well. The growth of the GDP was about 8% in the 1st quarter of 2009. The government, including the president, deserve credit for this.

“Uzbekistan is actually doing quite well.” :))) If you feel comforted believing this, fine. For the rest, we all know that the promotion of alcoholism is a way for the Kafirov regime to keep the Uzbek population dumb and oppressed. Nothing more or less.

Yes Uzbekistan is doing quite well in this global crisis ! World Bank and IMF support my claim. i’m not talking about general situation.
Alcohol is bad, i agree. But i can’t see here promotion of alcoholism. it’s simply an investment from a good quality company, which is good.

Dude, if you read “Murder in Samarkand” of Craig Murrey, you would know how WB and IMF prepare their reports - what sources they use, and whose stats they rely on… And I doubt that RSV will cost a lot in Uzbekistan. I guess author tried to raise to points here. 1 - flourishing alcohol business in a country, where dominant religion is Islam, 2 - the current socio-economic conditions in Uzbekistan, which as everywhere else in the region, is not doing good at all!
