Everyone in Central Asia knows Yulduz. Her name means Star in English and it suits her very well. I guess she is the second popular person in Uzbekistan (the first person is, of course, president Islam Karimov). For those who may not know Yulduz (what a shame!) - Yulduz Usmanova is a well known superstar Uzbek singer. She is famous mostly in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as her songs are in Uzbek and Tajik. For many people across Central Asia Yulduz Usmanova is an idol - almost a diety. She is a genuine superstar. None of the big ceremonies and holidays in Uzbekistan, like the celebration of the Independence Day, goes without her participance. She is a fluent speaker of Russian, Uzbek, Tajik and Turkish. Moreover, her interview with CNN shows that Yulduz does not have problems with English too, which is really unusual among Uzbek singers.

For all her talent I hope that she’s not that much of a Karimov-hugger so as to be totally discredited once Karimov is gone.

I would also look up the internet for the BBc programme called “meet the stans”, there she has also had an interview. Her respond (in English) as a deputy of the Uzbek Parliament was something worth of seeing and learning how the things work in the parliament.
