Central Elections Committee (CEC) of Uzbekistan gave a start to the elections campaign for political parties. According to the Constitution of Uzbekistan, article 117, “The elections [...] to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Zhokorgu Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, to representative bodies of state power of districts, regions, towns and cities shall be held in the year of the expiry of constitutional term of their powers – on the first Sunday of the third ten day period of December.” And that Sunday for year of 2009 is December 27.
I feel like our government (and CEC as its puppet) wants our people to keep a cheerful holiday mood up to December this year and then to head New Year celebration. (of course it’s just my Uzbek sarcasm and nothing more). In fact, power-holders really want to do that, but with one exception: holidays are for political elite only.
Why do I say so? Just take a look: recent events (Independence Day and 2,200 anniversary celebration) are just the beginning with financial bonuses. In 4 days after the elections with predictable results our elite is going to celebrate New Year with new “old” positions of parliamentaries of Oliy Majlis and other representative bodies around Uzbekistan “elected” by ‘The People of Uuzbekistan…’ Is it not a cool time for the holidays and nice presents??
Uzmetronom.com posted a news on this under the title of “Puppet-show Opens Its New Season”. Well, I do agree with that. At least if they can’t fulfil the plan of political development of Uzbekistan through free and transparent elections people might be interested in a colorful puppet-show on the eve of 2010…
