post-75059-1256823848_thumbWhen ex-president Askar Akaev lost his president’s seat during the so-called “Tulip revolution” in March 2005, many thought that whoever takes the position of the president of Kyrgyzstan after Akaev would not ever repeat his mistakes that caused his failure. And one of the biggest mistakes of Askar Akaev during his presidency was his clan-based way of ruling - his wife, son and daughter played too much role in government’s decision making process.

However, yesterday, president Kurmanbek Bakiev proved that “many” were not right - his sonMaksim Bakiev is appointed to head Central Development, Investments, Innovations Agency. The Agency was created after the recent large scale reforms in the government system initiated by president Bakiev. Some experts foretold [ru] after the announcement of new reforms that the top position in this Agency was created for Maksim Bakiev.

The appointment [of Maksim Bakiev]to the high-ranking government position is intended to legitimize his key role in most economic decisions in the country. Giving Bakiyev junior high official status will allow in the future, if necessary and under the best of circumstances, to ensure painless continuity of power in Kyrgyzstan.
Many people express their concern that president Bakiev take the Kyrgyz politics back to Akaev’s period, as they believe the Bakievs head almost all strategic institutions of the state. KG-777, a Diesel forum user, writes:
Kurmanbek Bakiev himself is president of the country. One of his brothers, Janysh Bakiev, is a Head of Department of State Security of Kyrgyzstan, the most closed government institution controlled directly by the president. Another brother, Marat Bakiev, is Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan in the Federal Republic of Germany. Another brother, Adil Bakiev, is a Trade Representative of Kyrgyzstan and adviser on economics and investments to the ambassador of Kyrgyzstan in China (a country with which Kyrgyzstan has the most active trading). The eldest son, Marat Bakiyev Kurmanbekovich is an advisor to the Chairman of the State Committee on National Security, which is now transformed into the State Agency for National Security. The top position [at the State Agency for National Security] for some reason has not yet been appointed, so it is possible that it will be headed by Marat Bakiyev, the other son of the president.
Anyway, there are people who believe that Maksim Bakiev can serve good in a government’s high position. A small survey [ru] conducted by the Information Agency 24.kg about the reaction of people on the appointment of Maksim Bakiev is a proof of it. The survey shows that many ordinary people express their hope that Maksim Bakiev, 32-year-old experienced businessman, can bring new ideas to develop the economy of the country.
It is too early to guess the results of this appointment. President Bakiev and his family definitely remember mistakes made by Akaev. So there is a hope that they will not repeat them. But anyway, there is a possibility that president Bakiev may end up passing the presidency to his son Maksim, as in 2014 Maksim Bakiev will turn 36, the age when a Kyrgyz citizen can become a president.
