What Rakhat Knows

This is a translation of Adam’s post from the Russian-language blog.

Sean Roberts reports in his blog on the Wall Street Journal article about Rakhat Aliev, his former wife and Kazakhgate trial. The translation of this story into Russian was first provided by the Aliev’s website.

The WSJ piece, in particular, tells that in 2003 Dariga Nazarbayeva, elder daughter of the president and ex-wife of Rakhat Aliev, recently sentenced to 40 years in jail for heading the mafia-type gang and coup plans, hired GlobalOptions, an American consulting company, which is known for oiling the deals of foreign governments and multi-national companies. She asked them to collect classified materials about the so called Kazakhgate trial — a criminal case against U.S. businessman and former aide to the Kazakh authorities James Giffen, accused of corrupting top Kazakh officials. The documents, which were mined by GlobalOptions, are now in the possession of Rakhat, who leaked them intentionally to the Western media. The GlobalOptions management warns that documents may be altered — and (knowing Aliev’s creativity) it is possible indeed.

However, the main question in this case is:
What was Dariga doing in 2003 (the year when her pet party Asar was on the rise)? Was she trying to help her father or was she gathering kompromat on him?
