NewEurasia competition in a social network Facebook gifted new reader Amazon Kindle PaperWhite to one of the residents of Central Asia. Sergei Proshkin from Tajikistan told us what he is going to do with his prize, and at the same time expressed his opinion about literature and «Novellasia» competition.
According to the conditions of the competition conducted by NewEurasia portal under the large scale literary competition «Novellasia», participants were required to pass two simple steps: 1) like our page on Facebook 2) share the post with the video of the competition.
On April 9 the organizers randomly chose the winner, whom became a resident of Dushanbe Sergei Proshkin. And while the coveted Amazon Kindle PaperWhite goes to its owner in Tajikistan, Sergei shared emotions of victory, told us what literature he reads, and what are his thoughts about the fiction competition for residents of Central Asia «Novellasia».
“When I saw that my group-mate liked NewEurasia page on Facebook, I also followed the link and learned about the lottery of Amazon Kindle PaperWhite. I was attracted by the opportunity to win a reader, and I decided to check myself for success. And in that moment I did not even imagine that I will be lucky”, – Sergei says.
According to the winner, a notification from the organizers caught him by surprise, because he had forgotten all about his participation in the lottery. He mistook a notification about winning for a joke.
“To say that I was elated is difficult, because at this moment I was on a lesson at the university, and had to keep emotions to myself, or I would have scared all the classmates led by the teacher. But on the break I was jumping across the audience shouting “I won, I won!!!””
When emotions came down a little bit, Sergei pondered what he would do with the prize. And although there have been suggestions to sell the precious Amazon Kindle, he decided to keep it because he was dreaming for a long time to purchase a reader. And now the dream came true! On his Amazon Kindle Sergei is going to read modern foreign literature, because he does not read the works of Central Asian authors very often.
“We had a course of Persian literature at the university. We studied the works of such writers as Rudaki, Ferdowsi and his poem” Rustam and Sohrab”, Abdurrahman Jami and his “Yusuf and Zulaikha”, Sadriddin Ayni “Death of the moneylender”. From the modern Central Asian literature I am familiar with the work of Timur Zulfikarov “Fatya”. Frankly, I am not a big fan of Persian literature, I think it is too “sweet””, – Sergei admits.
As it turned out, Sergei is not one of those people who rarely appeals to the books. He recently read the novel by Bernard Werber “Empire of Angels”, and now considers it as his favorite book.
“In one of the books that I read, the main character answering the question “Why this or that book is your favorite?” replied “Because I just read it.” So by this way I can describe my own preferences. I can’t tell you my favorite work, because each freshly-read book becomes for a while more interesting and attractive than all the rest for me.”
Sergei Proshkin has not tried yet to write a book himself. He thinks that he does not have the necessary experience and “courage” to create the whole stories out of a paper and a pen. But regarding the «Novellasia» competition Sergei responds positively, considering it as a great opportunity for Central Asian writers to express themselves.
“«Novellasia» is a very good incentive for young talents to express themselves at the level of the Central Asian countries. Frankly, I also had a desire to participate in the contest, but the lack of self-confidence prevented me. I guess I still need to gain experience and courage, and perhaps to find more free time to be able to “digest” all the thoughts and ideas, and then set them down on a paper.”
Well, let’s hope that one day Sergei Proshkin will find a gift as a writer in himself, and he will give the world some wonderful work. In the meantime, we wish him success, inspiration and new literary discoveries, with which he is now able to get acquainted with a new reader Amazon Kindle PaperWhite!Share
